It's amazing to think that the small island of Ko Phi Phi was almost completely destroyed in the tsunami of Christmas 2004 and was then deserted for 12 months afterwards before authorities slowly began the rebuilding. The only evidence now are the numerous tsunami evacuation signs and warning lights that would hopefully give residents a little warning should the same happen again.
We found the island a very nice place although it requires some exploration to find the really beautiful spots. We went on a trip to visit "The Beach" (i.e. Maya Bay on Ko Phi Phi Leh) - although it rained the entire time and we had to lie in the sea to keep warm.
We especailly liked Long Beach which is either a short longtail ride or not so short hike from the main town but we did find it a little difficult to choose somewhere to stay that was both nice and yet within our price range but eventually found The White House .
As luck would have it the very first person we met having left Phi Phi was a nice Italian guy who owns Marine House which looks perfect (www.marinehousephiphi.com) - he also told us that if we'd ventured just beyong Long Beach we'd have found an even nicer beach! Oh well, at least he managed to suggest a good restaurant in Phuket which we went to last night!
